Bench
This bench is part of my biological future research. There are not many options in term of environmentally friendly cushioning
materials for upholstery. In that search I came accross "zacate", a vegetable sponge-like fruit that is usually peeled and used
to scrub dishes. Since it has some cushioning I sewed many of them together and made a cushion for the bench. The structure
is made from white oak, glued with non-toxic substances and finished with carnauba wax. Since late 2008, the Z bench is manufactured
in FSC certified young teak, in two sizes and with three different seat options.
This piece was designed for the show "Diseño Muerto" (Dead Design) organized by Edgar Orlaineta for the Galería de Arte
Mexicano (GAM) in Mexico City. The show featured pieces that walked the line between art and design, which I interpreted
as different design laguages, friendly clashing into a single object.
