SWEET DISPOSABLE
Sugar objects
In this project, Emiliano Godoy proposes an approach to design in which a product’s lifespan is matched by its material’s
longevity. He uses sugar as an example of a short-term, environmentally friendly material for products.. Emiliano poses
a scenario where objects’ appropriate disposal is imbedded in their construction, using nature as a source and destination
for these objects.
You can download a PDF about the project here. One of the application of the material is this table lamp, built of eight identical wedges.
Years: 2003 - 2004
Material: Sugar
Size of lamp: 20 x 20 x 31 cm.
This scenario also demonstrates the possibility of eliminating the need for reclamation and waste storage. By proposing both
durable and non-durable products with a 100% biodegradable material, the disposal of the product is taken into the realm of
design: every product will be eventually discarded, and it is only considering that as a prominent design criteria that we can
guarantee a proper end.
Below we see a three dimensional form exercise sculpted from a bigger piece of sugar. This exercise showed the potential
of sugar as a model making material.

On the lower picture we see a prototype of a sugar golf tee. This product, as many other leisure oriented object, is disposable
from it's conception. The sugar alternative presents no harm to the environment or the golf course's lawn mowers.

To test the material’s strength, and play with its perceived weakness, I designed a coat hook. The unavoidable presence
of hardware allowed me to work on the issue of connections and contact with other materials. This coat hook appeared in
ID magazine's May 04 issue, in an article on shows in New York concurrent with the ICFF. The show, The Importace of Being
Earnest, was installed at Sustainable Living. The sugar table lamp was part of the show as well.
