PUERTO 82
Design research center
Puerto 82 was a design research center founded in 1997 by Emiliano Godoy, Luis Mercado, Emiliano Garcia and Francisco
Guizar. It remained in operation until early 2001. The center worked in theoretical and practical research on construction
techniques and formal aspects regarding industrial and architectural design. It also housed other projects and companies.
The center featured a cafeteria, a contemporary art exhibition area (curated by Jimena Acosta), a conference room, a
library and office space.
The project started with the interior and architectural design of its headquarters. The construction was the first project
on non conventional construction techniques, using straw bales for most of the building. On a 500 square meter area,
different levels of privacy were established allowing for both private office work and public exhibition activities to coexist
and interact.
Below w e see some pictures of the straw bale construction. The design featured the tallest straw bale load-bearing wall
constructed to that date - more than 6 meters in height, and many curved walls that were very innovative for that
construction technique.
