ICE BENCHES

This project discusses the problematic situation of water in Chimalhuacan. Although built on an ancient lake and still surrounded by some water bodies, the inhabitants of Chimalhuacan lack tubing in their homes and receive water through trucks. The project is a bench made in ice with an internal structure of reticular rebar, similar to what's used to reinforce concrete blocks . The bench will be placed in the public space of Chimalhuacan and after it melts it will reveal the permanent rebar structure. This bench will then stay behind in the urban landscape of Chimalhuacan a permanent memory of the ice-bench that in itself is a symbol of the relationship Chimalhuacan has with water.

The benches were developed between Héctor Esrawe and Emiliano Godoy, with Allard Van Hoorn, for the Platform for Urban Investigation (Mexico City, 2008). The Platform for Urban Investigation is an open environment collaboration involving architects, musicians, dancers, designers, writers, visual artists and all other cultural producers. Its aim is to stimulate fresh ways of looking at urban living and discover alternative solutions for cultural development. The platform takes up residence in cities around the world for months at a time working with locally and remotely connected participants to produce new cross-disciplinary output based on local themes.
Artist Allard van Hoorn founded the Platform for Urban Investigation in April 2006 as a continuously traveling research lab exploring the space in between current cultural expressions.

In Mexico City the Platform for Urban Investigation has worked with a group of fifteen designers, architects, urban planners, musicians and visual artists on the themes of water, infrastructure, displacement and urgency resulting in fourteen individual projects displayed at the Museo Ciudad the Mexico between January 23rd and March 31st 2008. Foundation/Collection Jumex generously sponsored the project.
