FLEX
Bench
The Flex bench has a seat made from thin strips of maple plywood featuring a pattern of ondulating lines. By twisting and bending these thin elements a rigid structural mesh is created, which although very strong is both visually and physically lightweight.
A custom plywood board was developed for this piece, which has enough flexibility but enough strength to be seated on. Since the user not only puts his or her weight onto the thin plywood, but also twists and moves while seated, the material needed to be strong but also very resilient. A board comprised of five layers of 0.6mm maple was developed, with a special grain direction arrangement between layers.
