3D FORM EXERCISES

These exercises were developed at the Pratt Institute in the Graduate ID Program. Following the technique created
by Rowena Reed Kostelow and Alexander Kostelow, the different exercises deal with different elements of form development
and understanding, such as line, plane, surface, volume, proportion and hierarchy.

This is a concave and convex surface development exercise. The four month long exercise is carved from
a single piece of plaster.

Years: 2002-2003
Material: Plaster
Size: 28 x 23 x 25 cm.

This exercise is about understanding the negative space created by concave surfaces. The 3D Cube, as is
usually referred to, is a semester long project, working slowly on the holes and analyzing the direction, axis, size
and connection of the openings.

Years: 2002-2003
Material: Plaster
Size: 8 x 8 x 8 inches

The plane exercise deals with the shape, direction, accent and axis of planes. By dealing with many planes,
the hierarchy and connection between them become a factor too. Several sketches are made in cardboard
and chipboard before making the final in Bristol board or sheet metal.

Years: 2002-2003
Material: Bristol Board
Size: 17 x 21 x 29 cm
